California Prop 65

What is California's Prop 65?

The California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 is a law in which the California Health and Safety Code requires disclosure to California consumers of possible exposure to listed chemicals by the state.

Better known as Prop 65, the consumers' right to know, the law not only applies to water, but also consumer goods such as food, clothing, toys, supplements, and more.

Additional details and information regarding Prop 65 can be found on the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) – www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65.html.

Proposition 65 warnings are found throughout California, such as restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, bars, schools, hospitals, and theme parks.

Are products with a Prop 65 warning safe?

Companies may include a Prop 65 warning on products for several different reasons. There are over 800 actively updated testing requirements included in Prop 65. Many of the listed requirements can be found naturally. Environmental and farming practices such as air, soil, and water can be contributing factors. As a result, these chemicals can be found in commonly eaten foods and throughout the food supply.
